FREQUENTY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where are services provided?
Services are provided mostly via telepractice at this time, with an in-person option becoming available again soon at the Clarity Speech Therapy office, located at 414 N. 3rd Street, Suite 14 on the main level of The Harmony Building, off of West Lowe in Fairfield.
What do parents/caregivers do during sessions?
This depends on the child, the specific goal, and family wishes. For telepractice sessions, a supervising parent is required to attend the session alongside the child. For in-person sessions, if the child is over the age of 3, many parents opt to let their child independently participate in speech sessions. You may request to sit in on all or part of a session or you may relax or do quiet work in the public waiting area just outside of the Clarity Speech Therapy suite. It is asked that you remain on the premises for the duration of your child’s speech session. The last several minutes will be saved to fill you in on how the session went and to answer any questions you may have. We’ll then schedule/confirm timing of the next session, and take care of any fees due before the next patient’s time slot.
What is the cost/Does Clarity Speech Therapy accept insurance?
One flat rate is charged for speech and/or language therapy sessions, regardless of how long the session lasts (on average sessions run 30-45 minutes each). The specific current rate can be shared during the free initial phone consultation before intake is completed. A different flat rate is charged for a Speech-Only Evaluation, and another flat rate is charged for a Speech-Language Evaluation. Please do not hesitate to inquire about this question further by phone.
Insurances now accepted at Clarity include Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Medicaid MCOs (Amerigroup & Iowa Total Care).
What is the cancellation policy?
Please give notice as soon as you know about any scheduled appointments you will miss (at least 24 hours is best) or when you are running late as a courtesy to the therapist, whose time is valuable. If enough notice is given, it may be possible for the therapist to fill that time. Cancelled appointments may be rescheduled as the schedule allows per request. If you arrive late, your child may not be able to receive their usual number of minutes for the session, depending on how soon the next client is scheduled. If reasonable prior notice is not given for repeated late arrival times or missed appointments, you may be alerted that your child needs to be rescheduled into a different regular time slot or may lose their spot altogether if there is a waiting list. Generally, patience and understanding is shown for the occasional unforeseen circumstances of life.
What are your hours?
Clarity Speech Therapy business hours are currently limited to Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 9:00 A.M.-7:00 P.M. by appointment only. Popular after-school time slots between 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. will tend to fill first.
How do I get started?
Please call 641-316-3901. A therapist will respond with a free initial phone consultation with you that will allow for the gathering of basic information and concerns, so that the best next step can be planned for your child.
What is a speech-language screening?
A Speech-Language Pathologist listens to your child talk with their well-trained ears, providing a general speech &/or language quick check (up to 30 minutes) that helps shed light on if your child needs a more comprehensive evaluation in one or more areas of communication. A short results summary is provided to you that outlines any characteristics of a possible disorder detected, or if their speaking skills are presenting as within normal limits for their age accompanied by basic recommendations.
What is an evaluation?
An evaluation is a full assessment in speech &/or language areas. It helps identify specific skills impacting your child that, if intervention is not provided for, may not improve on their own. Most often, evaluations include a speech-language sample, one or more standardized tests in the area(s) of concern, checking for readiness to learn the skills through trialing some therapy techniques, and gathering of relevant health information. Completion time ranges from 1-4+ hours, not necessarily during a single session. You are then provided with a written evaluation report with results and recommendations, including the proposed Plan of Care if therapy is needed.
What is speech-language therapy?
Speech-language therapy means that a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist is working 1:1 with your child to address their specific needs in the communication area(s) of concern. At Clarity Speech Therapy, therapists weave the needed work into activities such as play, crafts, and reading/telling stories to engage your child. Session slots typically range from 30-45 minutes. The frequency depends on the child and their level of need and readiness, and most often ranges from 1-2 sessions per week. Every 3 months (and more often as needed), your child’s progress is reviewed to check if your child needs any changes to their plan to benefit most.
Aside from direct treatment, what other services do you offer?
To help target skill transfer into other environments beyond the session, examples of more ways we can help are*:
*insurance plans tend not to cover these additional services, so expect to self-pay a fee that you may ask about for each of these options.
